How does RFID work without power?

May 05, 2023

Passive RFID tags are designed to work without an internal power source. Instead, they rely on the energy of the electromagnetic waves emitted by the RFID reader to power their operations. Here is how passive RFID tags work:

  1. The RFID reader emits an electromagnetic signal: The reader emits a radio frequency signal that carries power and data.
  2. The RFID tag antenna receives the signal: When the tag antenna comes into range of the reader, it captures the energy from the electromagnetic signal and converts it into electrical energy.
  3. The tag chip powers up: The electrical energy powers up the tag chip, which then sends a response signal back to the reader.
  4. The reader receives the response signal: The reader receives the response signal from the tag, which contains the unique identification number or other data stored on the tag.
  5. Data is processed by the reader: The reader processes the data received from the tag and uses it to perform a specific function, such as tracking inventory, monitoring assets, or managing access control.

Passive RFID tags have no internal power source and rely solely on the energy transmitted by the RFID reader to power their operations. The energy from the reader is used to activate the tag, power the chip, and send a response signal back to the reader. This process allows for the passive RFID tag to operate without the need for an internal power source.
