How does an ETC work in a car?

Jun 25, 2023

An Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system in a car enables seamless and automated toll fee payment without the need for physical transactions. Here's How ETC works in a car:

  1. ETC Device Installation: The car is equipped with an ETC device, which is typically a small electronic unit installed on the windshield or dashboard. This device contains an RFID tag and communicates with the ETC infrastructure at toll plazas.
  2. Prepaid Account Setup: Before using the ETC system, the car owner sets up a prepaid ETC account with a participating service provider. The account is linked to the ETC device and loaded with a prepaid balance.
  3. Approaching the Toll Plaza: As the car approaches a toll plaza or designated ETC lane, there are typically signs indicating the ETC-enabled lanes. The driver selects the appropriate lane and ensures the ETC device is properly installed and functioning.
  4. RFID Communication: When the car enters the ETC lane, the ETC device communicates with the ETC infrastructure at the toll plaza using RFID technology. RFID readers installed at the toll plaza detect the presence of the car's ETC device.
  5. Toll Fee Calculation: Once the RFID reader detects the ETC device, it reads the unique identification number associated with the device. The ETC system then accesses the corresponding account and retrieves information about the car and its associated toll fees. Factors such as the vehicle type, distance traveled, and any applicable discounts or fees are considered to calculate the toll amount.
  6. Automatic Payment: After the toll fee calculation, the ETC system deducts the corresponding amount from the prepaid balance linked to the ETC device. The transaction occurs automatically and in real-time, without the need for the driver to stop or manually make a payment.
  7. Gate Operation: In some ETC systems, physical toll gates or barriers are present. If the toll fee has been successfully paid, the gate or barrier opens automatically, allowing the car to pass through without stopping. In other systems, there may not be any physical barriers, and the toll collection process is entirely electronic.
  8. Transaction Confirmation: Upon successful payment, the ETC system records the transaction and provides a payment confirmation. The confirmation may be displayed on the ETC device, sent as a notification to a mobile app, or communicated through a vehicle-mounted display.
