Getting an RFID for a second-hand car involves two main steps: cleaning up the previous owner's data and registering the vehicle under your own account.
Since RFID tags are typically "frangible" (they break if you try to peel them off), you usually cannot reuse the physical sticker left on the windshield by the previous owner.
Here is the step-by-step process:
1. Deactivate the Old Tag
If the previous owner left their RFID sticker on the car, it is still linked to their bank account or e-wallet.
The Risk: If you don't remove/deactivate it, you might accidentally use their balance, or if they have an unpaid balance, you could be flagged at toll gates.
What to do: Ask the seller to "terminate" or "deregister" the tag through their service provider's app or website. If you cannot contact them, most toll authorities allow you to deregister it by providing the Deed of Sale and the Vehicle Registration (OR/CR).
2. Apply for a New RFID
Once the old tag is cleared, you can get a new one. In most regions (like China's ETC or Southeast Asia's Easytrip/Autosweep/TNG), the process is as follows:
Option A: Physical Installation Centers (Recommended)
Drive to a designated installation site (often found at highway entries, major gas stations, or large malls).
Documents needed: * Original Vehicle Registration (OR/CR).
Your Government ID.
The Deed of Sale (to prove ownership transfer).
Installation: A technician will test your windshield for metallic tint interference and stick a new tag in the optimal spot.
Option B: Online Application (Self-Fitment)
Apply via the official app (e.g., Alipay/WeChat for China ETC, or Touch 'n Go for Malaysia).
The tag is mailed to your home.
Activation: You will need to scan the tag's QR code and upload photos of your car's license plate and the installed tag to activate it.
3. Special Considerations for Second-Hand Cars
Check for Outstanding Fines: Before installing a new tag, check if the vehicle's plate has any "blacklisted" status due to the previous owner's unpaid tolls. You may need to settle these before a new account can be opened.
Tag Placement: If you are installing it yourself, remember to stay at least 5 cm (2 inches) away from any metal frames and avoid placing it behind heavy metallic window tints.
