How to activate NFC feature?

Mar 24, 2026

Activating NFC depends on whether you are using an Android or an iPhone. Since we are in 2026, most devices have streamlined this process into a "one-tap" experience.

1. On Android Devices (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.)

Most Android phones allow you to toggle NFC on or off to save battery or enhance privacy.

Via Quick Settings (Fastest):

Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the full Quick Settings panel.

Look for the NFC icon (it looks like an "N" or two curved lines).

Tap it to turn it blue (On). If you don't see it, tap the Edit (pencil) icon to add the NFC button to your tray.

Via Main Settings:

Go to Settings > Connections (or Connected Devices).

Select NFC and contactless payments.

Toggle the switch to On.

Optional: Tap "Contactless payments" to choose your default wallet (e.g., Google Wallet or Samsung Pay).

2. On iPhones (iPhone 8 and Newer)

Apple handles NFC differently; there is usually no manual "On/Off" switch because NFC is always active in the background for efficiency.

For Payments (Apple Pay): Simply double-click the side button. NFC activates automatically to communicate with the payment terminal.

For Reading Tags/Automations: 1. Just bring the top-back of your iPhone (near the camera) close to an NFC tag. A notification should automatically pop up.

2. Older iPhones (iPhone 7/8): You may need to open the Control Center and tap the NFC Tag Reader icon manually.

For Programming Tags:

Open the Shortcuts app > Automation tab > + (Plus) > NFC. This "wakes up" the reader so you can scan a new tag to set up a custom command.

Troubleshooting: Why isn't it working?

The "Faraday" Case: If you have a very thick or metallic phone case (or a magnetic car mount plate), it might block the signal. Try removing the case.

Sweet Spot: The NFC antenna is usually near the top edge (iPhone) or the center-back (Android). Try varying the position.

Screen Lock: For security, NFC usually only works when the screen is unlocked and active.
