How does an EAS tag work?

Apr 19, 2023

An EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) tag is a security tag used to prevent theft of merchandise from retail stores. The tag consists of a small electronic circuit with a metal coil and an antenna. The tag is attached to the merchandise and deactivated or removed by the store staff when the merchandise is purchased.

The EAS tag works by utilizing electromagnetic technology. There are two main types of EAS systems: radio-frequency (RF) and acousto-magnetic (AM).

In an RF system, the EAS tag contains a resonant circuit that responds to a specific radio frequency transmitted by the store's EAS system. When the tag passes through the detection area at the store's exit, it responds to the RF signal and triggers an alarm.

In an AM system, the EAS tag contains a strip of magnetic material that is magnetized by the store's EAS system. When the tag passes through the detection area at the store's exit, it creates a disturbance in the magnetic field and triggers an alarm.

Both RF and AM EAS systems can be used in combination to provide enhanced security. Additionally, some EAS tags may also contain sensors that detect tampering or damage to the tag, further enhancing their security features.
