Do RFID tags work on metal?

Mar 09, 2023

Standard RFID tags may not work effectively on metal surfaces due to interference and reflection. This is because metal surfaces reflect and absorb radio waves, causing the RFID tag to have a weak signal or not work at all. However, there are specialized RFID tags called anti-metal or on-metal RFID tags that are designed to work on metal surfaces.

Anti-metal RFID tags use a different construction and design compared to standard RFID tags. They typically have a shielding layer made of materials such as ferrite or foam, which absorbs the energy from the RFID reader signal and prevents it from reflecting back to the reader. This allows for better signal transmission and reception, even on metal surfaces.

In addition to the shielding layer, some anti-metal RFID tags also use a different frequency range, such as high frequency (HF) instead of ultra-high frequency (UHF). HF has better penetration and is less susceptible to interference from metal.

So, while standard RFID tags may not work well on metal, anti-metal RFID tags are specifically designed to work on metal surfaces and can be used to track metal assets in various industries.
