Do key fobs need RFID protection?

May 25, 2026

It depends on the type of key fob and the technology it uses.
Not all key fobs require RFID protection, but some modern smart key fobs - especially automotive keyless entry systems - can be vulnerable to wireless signal theft or relay attacks.

Traditional RFID access key fobs usually operate at:

  • 125KHz (LF)
  • 13.56MHz (HF/NFC)

These systems typically have:

  • Very short reading distance
  • Limited communication range
  • Lower risk of remote theft

For most building access systems, RFID protection is generally unnecessary because:

  • The reader must be very close
  • Data often contains only an ID number
  • The risk level is relatively low

However, cloned credentials can still be a concern if weak encryption or low-security chips are used.
