It depends on the type of key fob and the technology it uses.
Not all key fobs require RFID protection, but some modern smart key fobs - especially automotive keyless entry systems - can be vulnerable to wireless signal theft or relay attacks.
Traditional RFID access key fobs usually operate at:
- 125KHz (LF)
- 13.56MHz (HF/NFC)
These systems typically have:
- Very short reading distance
- Limited communication range
- Lower risk of remote theft
For most building access systems, RFID protection is generally unnecessary because:
- The reader must be very close
- Data often contains only an ID number
- The risk level is relatively low
However, cloned credentials can still be a concern if weak encryption or low-security chips are used.
