Can RFID wristbands get wet?

Jun 25, 2026

Yes, RFID wristbands can absolutely get wet, provided they are made from the right materials.

Whether an RFID wristband is waterproof depends entirely on its outer casing:

Waterproof (Silicone, Plastic, and PVC): Wristbands made of silicone, hard plastic, or PVC (like the ones used in swimming pools, waterparks, and gyms) are completely waterproof. The delicate electronic components-the RFID chip and the antenna-are entirely sealed inside the non-porous material, preventing water from reaching them.

Water-Resistant (Fabric and Woven): Fabric bands, commonly used at music festivals, can get wet in the shower or rain, but they absorb water and take time to dry. The RFID chip itself is usually housed in a slide-on plastic tag, which keeps it safe from short-term exposure.

Not Waterproof (Paper or Tyvek): While Tyvek is splash-resistant and won't tear when wet, prolonged submersion can degrade the band or the adhesive holding it together, making it unfit for swimming.

So long as you are using PVC or silicone RFID bands, guests can swim, dive, and shower with them repeatedly without damaging the technology.
